For too long, the Government’s top down housing targets based on Borough / District and City environs has held house building back. Matthew will protect the green belt and the green fields we all hold so dear. Matthew will use the new powers to acquire and dispose of land to build houses, commercial space and infrastructure, for growth and regeneration sensitively and only in collaboration with the communities impacted. He will look at the region as a whole and not a disparate group of land locked communities.
Councillor Relf said, “For far too long, our communities have been dogged by top down, Government housing targets with whole communities living under a cloud of thousands of houses being crowbarred into their environs. As the new Mayor, I will prioritise house building including social and affordable housing but only where they have the consent of local communities and constituent councils.”
