East Midland’s Mayor hopeful Matthew Relf has slammed the Kings Speech as a ‘missed opportunity to help Local Government.’  Councillor Relf, who is tanding to be the next Mayor of Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire claimed that the Government’s legislative programme announced this week by King Charles III did not address the pressing issues facing local government.

Matthew said, “The King’s speech showed a Government running out of ideas.  It included nothing about Local Government as a time when Councils like Nottingham and Nottinghamshire are at breaking point.  Councils are facing bankruptcy – putting vital services at risk.

“The Government promised to ‘put local people in control of their future’, but there was nothing in the King’s speech acknowledging the urgent issues local government is facing, particularly when it comes to delivering on the UK’s climate ambitions.”
