Meet Matt Relf: Your Independent Candidate for East Midlands Mayor 

Matt is a proud son of Mansfield/Sutton In Ashfield. Attending state schools and immersed himself in community activities such as Scouting and Duke of Edinburgh Awards across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Following his Sixth Form education, Matt gained invaluable experience in the IT industry, working at an IT mail-order firm in Worksop. His passion for technology led him to pursue a degree in Computer Science at the University of Warwick, where he graduated with honours in 2000. 

Professional Journey

Matt’s journey in IT commenced near Manchester with ICL, where he contributed to developing internet banking and anti-terrorism systems. His expertise then took him to Bakewell, Derbyshire, where he specialised in designing online ticketing systems for major rail links serving Gatwick, Heathrow, and Stansted airports. With stints at global Interflora and leading firms in Nottingham and Birmingham, Matt honed his skills in e-commerce and ticketing system strategy and design. 

Community Engagement

In 2006, Matt tied the knot with his Nottinghamshire-born wife amidst the serene backdrop of Dovedale, Derbyshire. Together, they are nurturing their family life, relishing parenthood with their 12-year-old daughter. Matt’s commitment to community service is evident in his involvement in community projects, including a notable creation for Treetops Hospice, taking a lead creating the stunning sculptural tree on BBC’s DIY SOS for Children In Need alongside Nick Knowles, Zoe Ball and Sam Ryder. An enthusiastic camper and adrenaline fan, Matt enjoys outdoor adventures with his family.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

In 2009, Matt embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, founding his own business offering IT consultancy in highways management. He helped mobilise highways maintenance scheme across the UK for local government authorities in Lincolnshire, Derby City, Buckinghamshire, Hounslow, and the Isle of Wight. In 2013, Matt showcased his ingenuity by designing and patenting a portable monitor for laptop users, which garnered global acclaim and successful sales worldwide.

Political Leadership

Inspired by his community engagement, Matt joined the Sutton Junction Residents Association in 2016, leading efforts to oppose a detrimental Local Plan. His effective advocacy compelled a re-evaluation of the plan by the National Inspector, underscoring his aptitude for effective representation. Matt’s political journey culminated in his decision to stand as an Ashfield Independent candidate for his local ward in 2018.

Vision for the Future

Matt’s political journey saw a remarkable start with resounding victories in by-elections and local council elections with over 80% of public votes. Entrusted with the portfolios of regeneration, planning and economic development for Ashfield, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, forging transformational partnerships with local businesses and educational institutions. Matt’s strategic leadership bore fruit with successful bids securing over £90 million in regeneration funding for projects that will have generational change on the local area, making him the most successful councillor in the UK at securing additional funds from the government.
